Little Man Tie Tutorial

Okay, so here's a tutorial on how to make a fabulous tie for your little man. So if you have 30 minutes and some basic sewing skills, this project is for you.

Ready to see the entire tutorial.. Just click below to expand!

First, download the pattern here:

TIE PATTERN, All Sizes  Tie PATTERN

*** Always check to see that the 1 inch by 1 inch square is just that. If it doesn't you can always try enlarging/shrinking. ***

For a Newborn tie, you will need pattern pieces  A and B for Newborn
For a 2-5T tie, you will need pattern pieces A, B for 2-5T, and C

Print the pattern pieces out, cut them out, and tape the pattern pieces together. If you are making one for any sizes in between just add extra inches to the skinny end of the newborn tie. I know, I know.. I'm not being very precise, my apologies. : )  You can also customize this pattern by making it an oh-so-chic skinny tie or an oh-so-fun wide tie if you want by simply narrowing or widening the pattern.

Next, gather your supplies.
You will need:

1/4 yard of fabric (prewashed). I used cotton. I'll call this the main fabric from here on.
1/4 yard of lining fabric (prewashed). I used cotton.
OPTIONAL: 1/4 yard of light weight Iron on interfacing  (Some people said the interfacing made their tie too thick, I personally have had no problems with the Pellon brand light weight interfacing. But if you want to skip this part, by all means save yourself the time and money!)
3 1/2 - 4  inches of sewable velcro
pins
thread to match
scissors
large safety pin (this will make your life much easier!)
Iron, ironing board
and don't forget a sewing machine!

Ready. Let's go.
1. First, cut out your paper pattern pieces (A, B, and C)and tape together.

2. Pin and cut the tie pattern from the main fabric and the lining fabric. Put the pattern on the bias of the fabric to allow for some stretch and give. If you are using interfacing, cut that out as well and iron it onto the main fabric piece.

3. From your main fabric, cut a 2 1/2 inch by 20 inch rectangle for the neck band. (We'll use this later)

4. Grab your main fabric and lining fabric tie pieces. With right sides together, sew only the two v shaped corners at each end of the tie using 1/4 inch seam allowance. Clip corners.

5. Flip tie so that the right side of the fabric is facing out. Make sure the two end points are nice and pointy! Iron.

6. Fold your tie lengthwise with the lining fabric facing out. Line up all four layers of fabric. You can pin them together if you want. (I'm a bit lazy and skip that part!)

7. Sew along the length of the tie. You will probably need more than a 1/4 seam allowance here.. just make sure to get all four layers!

8. Iron the seam open.

9. Turn your tie right side out. Iron again. You're almost done sewing! Yeah!

10. Take the neck strap piece you cut earlier (2 1/2 inch by 17 inch rectangle) and fold in half length-wise (you know the drill, right sides together). Sew down the length of the fabric.

11. Turn the neck piece right side out. Here is where the safety pin comes in handy. Safety-pin one side of the fabric and then insert the safety pin through the fabric casing. Push the pin through to the other end pulling the fabric as you go. (Clear as mud, yeah?!?). Iron with the seam at the bottom (don't center the seam here.)

12. Now you will will simply tuck in the two ends of fabric into the casing of the neck piece. (I suggest folding a good 1/2- 1 inch into the casing.)

13. Pin the rough side of the velcro at one end of the neck piece. Flip the neck piece over and pin the soft side of the velcro at the opposite end of the neck piece (Make sure you have one piece of velcro pinned to the front and one pinned to the back.)

14. Sew along the velcro pieces as shown below.

That good old neck strap should look like this:

Horray! You're done sewing.. Now for the tricky part. Tying the tie.

Place the two pieces as shown below. The neck piece should be above the tie. The wide part of the tie should be to your right.

Wide part of the tie goes up and behind the neck piece like so...

Now bring it down and in front of the neck piece.

Tighten. Note where the knot will be. Now is when you should check the length of the tie and adjust accordingly.

Take the narrow part of the tie and bring it up and behind the neck piece.

Now bring it down and in front of the neck piece (Thank goodness for photos!)

Tighten. You will want to pull the tie down and the neck pieces out to tighten everything up. (This takes a little practice.. but you can do it!)

This is what the back of the knot should look like. I often (but some times I'm just lazy!) will tack the back together. Just hand sew a few stitches on the bottom of the knot to keep it in place.

Now find your own little stud and try it on!

  1. Thank you so much for this tutorial! It looks very detailed. I would love to try making these ties. I am having trouble opening the pattern. Every time I click on any of the A B or C links, it takes me to the acrobat site. Is it possible that the links need to be updated? Any hints? Much appreciation! Thanks!

  2. This is WAY easier than when I made my little man ties. And my sister-in-law was just asking me to make her some, to which I refused :) But now I can just refer her to your site...yay! Thanks so much.

  3. Heather, I just checked the links, they do work for me, so I'm a bit puzzled on why they don't come up for you. It did take a while to load and the Adobe Acrabat site came up first. I would be happy to email you a copy of the pattern. I just need your email for that!

Lindsay, it is a really easy tie to make! You are very welcome!

  4. Okay, I think I got it figured out. I am kind of new to the Acrobat world (except for Adobe Reader) so I downloaded new programs and I guess maybe I had to restart or something because it worked today. I really appreciate your help! And I REALLY appreciate the pattern. I am so looking forward to trying this! Thanks again!

  5. Glad you figured it out!
    Good luck!

  6. I have been searching for a tutorial on how to make little ties. I LOVE this. Thanks for your clear explanation as well as the awesome pictures.
The only thing I had trouble with is making the knot look like a triangle rather than a square. (I am not known for my tying skills). I found that if I tied it in the exact REVERSE way of your instructions with pulling the fat end of the tie through instead of the skinny end, it worked out better for me. However, it appears that you did not have any trouble with the knot, so it's probably just me. :) Thanks again.

  7. Thanks for the tip, Shannon. Perhaps others are having the same problem?

    Glad it worked for you!

  8. What a wonderful idea! I found this at just the right time--I needed a little tie for my 5 year-old to wear with a nice shirt at a family weeding. Your directions were clear and easy to follow: thanks so much for sharing!

The only change I made was to eliminate the interfacing (even with lightweight interfacing the first tie I made was way too "stiff" and impossible to turn inside out) as I was using quilting cotton for both the front and the lining. I'm sure with different fabrics the interfacing would be needed and would provide a little more weight/body.

Thanks again for the wonderful tutorial, and for taking the time to post it!

  9. I just made one this afternoon. I had a bit of a rough time flipping the tie right side out when it was done (I think it was just kind of stiff and bulky for how small of a hole it was going through) but I did get it to turn eventually (I used a pair of tweezers) and I think it looks fabulous! Your directions and pattern were awesome, thank you so much for sharing!

  10. Kay and Jana, thanks for the feedback. I have mentioned that the interfacing is optional. I have used quilting cotton as well. I use the light weight interfacing that comes in a package. I think it is the Pellon brand, I wonder if it is not lighter than other "lightweight" interfacings out there.

Thanks again for the feedback. I'm sure that will help others out there making the ties as well!

  11. I'm so excited I found this tutorial! I can't wait to get started with some cute little ties as a gift for my sister's new baby boy!

  12. I'm almost done completing 2 ties and they are turning out fantastic! Thanks so much for posting the tutorial for us! Hopefully I can figure out how to post a picture!

    ReplyDelete
  13. Is the seam allowance 1/4" for everything? I did 3/8" for step #7 to give me a little more fabric to stay ironed open. I agree, the interfacing is essential on thinner fabrics, but thicker fabrics may not need it. The "cheap" thin interfacing that comes in a package also helps keep the bias fabric from shifting and stretching the wrong way while working with it.

  17. Exactly what I needed right when I needed it! Thank you so much for posting this! Just made ties for my 2 favorite little boys! They didn't turn out perfect (This is, what...the 5th time I've used my sewing machine??) but I think they look pretty darn good!

Only thing that I found a little confusing was when you said to sew just the triangle...it was probably pretty straightforward for most people...but I got confused and sewed a smidge up each side. I quickly realized the error of my ways, but maybe an aerial pic (meaning one from the top) would be more clear than the side pic...because that's what confused me.

Thanks again for this great post! So easy to follow and just exactly what I wanted! :)

  18. I just made newborn and toddler-sized ties for a friend to use for her upcoming family pictures. They turned out so cute! Thank you for a fantastic tutorial that was easy and a big success!

  19. I have made these ties a few times and I love the pattern! It is very easy to complete and looks terrific. I noticed you do not want people to make and sell ties using your pattern. I want to sell them for a fundraiser to help my sister with some medical bills. Is there a way to work with you for this exception? Thank you!

  27. Dave and Jeanine, not really sure why it is printing huge. I am quite a dunce when it comes to technical issues. : ) I can send you an emailed version if you would like. Just let me know your email and I'll send it to you.

  28. Dave and Jeanine,
Not sure if this will fix it for you, but make sure to download it and then print the downloaded file. Don't just download it from the Adobe site, it is really big when I print from there, but it is the right size when I download it. Let me know if that works for you. If not, I'll send it via email!

  29. What width velcro did you use? I have been trying to find 1/2" but have had no luck. what is the finished width of the neck band? thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  30. My neckband ends up being about 1 1/2 inch wide by 15-16 inches long. If you use four inches of velcro, you can get the neckband to fit just about any size. My velcro is between 1/2 inch and 3/4 inch wide. You can get up to an inch wide velcro. You just want your neckband to be a bit wider than the velcro. I bought my velcro at Joann's. Hope that helps!

  31. This tutorial is GREAT!! I've been looking for a simple tutorial for this, and here yours is! It only took me about 30 mins to make one. I will be using this over and over. Thank you!!

  32. I did it! I just sewed a tie! Thanks so much. My only problem was inside outing the entire thing. I ended up sewing it too skinny and having too much extra fabric on the little point end. And I used a plain elastic rather than go through that hassle again. It still works perfectly. Thanks so much!

Since I was using plain black fabric, I was able to make it only 1 layer thick, and just hemmed the two pointed ends. It worked out great. It wouldn't look as good with a printed fabric though. But mine turned out great! I'll post a link to my page once I get pictures up!

I like ties on the long side so I added an inch to the 5 year olds and 2 inches to the 7 year olds. And I did have to call my mom to explain some things, but that's because I'm not much of a sewer. Thanks for an awesome tutorial.

  69. I just happened upon this tutorial, and have actually been making ties with a very similar pattern for my boys for a couple years now, with one difference. I use real ties (that my husband no longer uses), unpick the stitching, iron it flat (remove the lining) and cut the little man tie out of the big man tie. I think it's fun. :) It makes them look more like big man ties to have stripes and stuff. Anyway, just something you could try. :) Awesome tutorial! I'm going to make some for my boys to match their sisters' christmas dresses.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Try to download the pattern then print. If you print without downloading it prints the screen which is too large. : ).

Make sure the square is 1 inch by 1 inch.

    ReplyDelete
  83. To continue, Once printed, Just make sure the reference square is one inch by one inch. The pattern when printed correctly looks much wider then a little boy tie should look but after sewing it...it is the right size: ). I've had several readers confused by that.

  85. I'm outing myself as seriously uncrafty here, but after clicking the links I still don't understand what you mean by cutting against the grain. Does the length of the tie run from selvage to selvage? I've seen other tutorials that call for cutting it on the bias... I am confused and feeling a little silly, especially since your photo has the pattern laying at an angle to the fabric. Help this girl who's still moderately afraid of her sewing machine! ;)

  92. I haven't made this yet (hopefully tomorrow) but I totally appreciate so much the time you have taken to share this with others. I always feel so greedy using other people's ideas for myself! I've tried other tie tutorials that I didn't care for but this looks great and I"m anxious to try. Again, realy truly thank you for sharing your talent!

  93. It's funny you ended up commenting on my craft blog! As you could see I don't really post on there any more! I used to sell my crafts and after baby three I scaled back to only locals, then after baby four I stopped completely, so I don't really ever post on there any more. I devote my blogging time now to my family blog, but it's all good. It's because instead of crafting I spend my time on homeschooling my 5 kids! BUT...I got the tie's done today and they turned out pretty good! I think for next time i'll widen the narrow end of the tie...that was a bugger to get turned right side again!!! We are using them for Easter pictures tomorrow and I post on my family blog on Sundays so I'll come back here and link ya once i get those pictures op. Thanks again for sharing this tutorial!

  94. I'm glad I'm not the only one who's just barely discovering this tutorial! :) It's really hard to find a tie for a toddler (especially at a decent price), so I decided last minute to make my son a tie for Easter! It's honestly my first real sewing project, so I was really nervous! I plan to make more and perfect it, but I'm really happy with how this tie turned out! I think I'll even let him wear it in public ;) Thank you THANK YOU for posting this tutorial for all of us to use! You're a lifesaver!!

  96. My son is 6 months old, in 12-18 month clothes. Would the bigger tie be most appropriate for him or do you think it would be too big?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I would do the bigger tie. You can adjust the length when you tie your tie. In fact my son has worn the same tie from 18 months to 6 years because I just retie it to be longer. Hope that helps!

I had bought an outfit pants and tie for a photoshoot but the little boy didnt fit them and I have one day to get another so pulled out my sewing machine (dusted it) and made the pants but the tie had me stumped. After a few trial and errors I am a pro. I couldnt even make a pillow case when I was a school thats how bad at sewing I am but your detailed photos made it easy. Thank you from a very very happy photographer.

  104. Awesome tutorial! I just finished one for a toddler for a wedding and it turned out perfect! Instead of velcro, the mom requested elastic. The 4 yr old's neck is 12 1/2 inches so I made the neck piece 8 inches x 3 inches, then stitched the ends of one 7 inch piece of 1/2 inch elastic into the ends of the neck piece so it formed a circle, then tied the tie part as you instructed.

I had to watch how much elastic I was feeding into the neck piece ends to make sure the length of the neck piece would come out right, but if it is too big I'll be able to just shorten by cutting the middle of the elastic and restitching it. If I could post pic I would. So cute!! The little man is going to look so adorable! Thank you so much!

  105. I checked out your website, smallbirdie, and loved your little man in his tie!

And Kathy, brilliant idea about the elastic! That is an easy way to alter this pattern. Thanks for sharing.

  106. Hi! I already made a few of these for my baby boy =)The way you wrote the directions makes it super easy to follow along.
Do you think I could make just the tie piece with out the neck strap for an adult. Would it still be able to be tied traditionally? Just looking for your opinion. Thanks!

    1. Great idea! Yes, that would certainly work. You would just have to make it much longer. I would use an existing adult tie as a reference. Let me know how it works out!

  108. Thank you for this nice, simple to follow tutorial - made 2 ties for my 4 year old. Just one note - the neck tie part is a little on the short side - it fits but probably won't for too long, so I'd need to make a slightly longer version. Another couple of inches would do it!
Still, great tutorial - will be forwarding to my sewing buddies!

Your photo tutorial was amazing!! I had it completed in 20 minutes!! Thank you so much!! You saved the day!!!

  121. Hi thanks so much for this tutorial, very easy! The only question I have is about when you fold the tie in half lengthwise and sew along it, do you also have to pivot and sew to the small point? When I turned mine inside out it was unfinished (the raw edge) and I had to fold in and sew. I used interfacing to give it more body and was a bit trick to turn and ties the knot but I got there in the end. Thanks again! :-)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Humm.. you should have sewed the pointed edges before you sewed the tie lengthwise (see step #4). That way you should have no raw edges on the tie. Does that clarify it? : )

Yes, on the interfacing, I use a the lightweight cheap Pellon brand and it works fine, but others have said it made their tie too stiff .

    1. I apologize for replying so late. I've had a few things keeping me busy and haven't been the the blog in months!!

I hope you were able to figure it out! I would just add a few inches all the way around the tie. How many inches depends on how tall the child is. That way it would be wider and longer.

      Delete
  140. This turned out adorable! I think I understand why people are saying the pattern is printing too big - it's actually printing right, I double checked the size of the square before and after printing it, it just looks huge. Especially compared to your first example photo, since it looks like you're using a newborn size, and I was using the toddler size. So after measuring 3 times and deciding there was no way it was going to look right, I decided to just go for it, and it turned out perfect! I think because the pattern is shaped like a tie, but ends up much smaller after sewing, the pattern makes it look like it's going to turn out to be this big goofy looking tie. But they are adorable, and just the right proportion :)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It does look huge, but half the width will be in the back of the tie. Thanks for clarifying that. I'm sure lots of readers could use that help. I've received a few emails questioning the size of the pattern. : )

One thing I would add between "Now bring it down and in front of the neck piece (Thank goodness for photos!)" and "tighten" is something like, "Now slide the small end behind the large end to look like a regular tie". 151. I'm excited to sew this tie and a pair of matching booties for my little boy (due in less than a month!!!) but I'm fairly new to sewing and I understand that cutting on the bias is stretchier, but if you are using interfacing, why cut on the bias? just curious-I am one of THOSE that likes to know "why" and "how" things are/work before starting a project:) thanks!

Congrats on your baby boy!! Hope you are doing well. Good question on the bias, Cutting on the bias will help when you tie the tie, the fabric will drape (for lack of a better word) better. Sometimes I don't cut on the bias if I don't have enough fabric and the tie still ends up just great.
      HOpe that helps!

Thanks for the pattern...by the way, I used the fusible interface and it was a little too stiff to turn right side out easily (I had to use needle nose pliers) so next time I'm going to skip that step (I love being able to skip steps).

Everytime he wears one to church I get tons of compliments and often the question- is that a real tie? I made another one for Christmas this year. When I showed my hubs he said, "Do you mind if I retie it?" He tied a double windsor! Saying, "I didn't wear a double windsor for the first time until I was on my mission (age 20)." Our little guy will be looking especially dapper this holiday season, thanks to you!
